Who is Lexie, and why are mascots vital to branding?

The Importance of Company Mascots
We’re sure that all of you have heard (or been stalked by) Duo, the Duolingo owl. Even though some of you might not know the owl’s name, you can recognise the design and the little owl anywhere you see it: memes, articles or company marketing. Other notable mascots include Ronald McDonald, Mickey Mouse, Michelin Man, and “Rich Uncle” Pennybags, the Monopoly man.
Reasons Why Brands Still Love Mascots
There are many reasons why mascots are essential to branding. One of the biggest reasons discussed in marketing is making your company more approachable and humanised. Humans need something to relate to, which is difficult when no physical being exists. Think of any notable brand, and most likely, they have some version of a mascot. Another reason why mascots are important is mascots are excellent storytellers who aid your content by carrying your story beyond words. Mascots are also a perfect way to connect with your brand audience by creating familiarity, which increases your brand’s engagement rate.
Mascots can also break language barriers like there’s no tomorrow. Our world is constantly getting smaller, with companies having employees from dozens of different countries, apps and websites translated into over 100+ languages and much more. If your first language isn’t English and perhaps you grew up in a BRICS country, you might remember those bootleg cartoons that we used to watch with a single male voiceover. Shoutout to that one man who translated the entire Disney repertoire and made it possible for us Slavs to be a part of it. Although it was incredibly monotone and sometimes borderline scary, kids had no problem relating to the characters and the story because their personalities radiated through the screen due to their unique design and animation, whether the voiceover was professional or not.
Now imagine a good brand mascot that doesn’t even need a voice to be recognisable by the masses. In Spain, Mr. Clean is referred to as Don Limpio; the brand translated his name, but the image remains, and everyone knows perfectly well who he is.
What Makes a Good Mascot?
There are plenty of qualities that embody an excellent mascot. However, our leading three are simplicity, personality, and colour. If you start with those three things, we guarantee that creating a lovable and recognisable mascot will be much easier.
In our opinion, personality is the most important of the three. Colours can change (although rarely). The logo’s simplicity varies with time and what’s in fashion (look up the evolution of Duo’s image), but the personality stays forever. Your mascot’s personality can be directly extracted from your brand’s tone of voice, whether it is chirpy, cheerful, informative, educational, severe, or matter-of-fact. Identifying and setting a brand tone of voice is a direct path towards a successful brand mascot.

Lexie!
This is Lexie, the official first design of the Nova Connect mascot. Here’s information about Lexie:
- Breed: Basic Red Fox (not too basic, though… just the right amount to know the best brunch place in your barrio)
- Occupation: Full-time traveller and explorer
- Full Name: Alexandra Foxingtail
- Hobbies: Photography, Tapas, trying new things and salsa.
- Fears: FOMO and a boring routine life.
Lexie is basically your long-distance older sister. She doesn’t see you often but will always have your back when you visit somewhere new in Spain. Lexie will always give you the numbers of her local friends who’ll take you to the best places no matter what you want to do and at what time.
Our fox’s lifelong dream was always to travel the world. She’s dedicated the past few years to focusing on exploring Spain and Portugal. She realised there were millions of underground gems that many didn’t know about, ranging from hidden coves in Ibiza to Football pitches with insane views in Barcelona. Lexie’s always eager to share the best places she knows with others and encourage people from all backgrounds with different interests to get out of their comfort zones, meet new people, venture into new locations and make each other feel welcome.
